After years of garage bands that pretty much stunk, someone invited me to a party at the Badd Azz practice house. They were jamming all original tunes that kicked ass! The only problem was that they didn't have a singer. I ended up getting up on stage and jamming with them and they soon asked me to join the band. It was my first opportunity to work with some really good musicians. The Band consisted of Carl Chaney on vocals, Ernie Murray on bass, Preston Montgomery on drums and Fred Lerch on guitar. Ernie and Fred were originally from Ohio and Preston and I were the Texas boys. One of the Founding Members of Badd-Azz, Kim Garrison, had recently left the band to move to Witchita Falls to help rebuild after a tornado that hit in 1979. He was somewhat of a local legend because he was a phenomenal guitarist even after losing part of his left hand in an accident. Anyway, we had a practice house where we threw wild parties and played until the wee hours of the morning. You see, our practice house was secluded, so no one complained. This is a picture of me singing at one of those parties. We used dry ice to get the fog effect. We did mostly original music and even won a battle of the bands. It was great, but doomed to failure for the same reasons as most other bands. |
Well, it was 1980 and I was young and had a whole lot more energy than I do now. Even if I didn't have as much common sense. I had been jamming around in various garage bands around Amarillo, Texas, when I ran into these guys. They were Ernie Murray, Fred Lerch and Preston Montgomery and they called themselves Badd Azz. They were all older than me and had been in the local music scene a bit longer. It seemed to me to be rather cocky to call yourselves Badd Azz, but these guys were. They had been around for a few years under various incarnations, different singers and a different guitarist and had some really solid originals. Some of the songs that we did back then were, I think, ahead of their time. Fred and Ernie worked for the local Bell Helicopter plant North of town and had rented one side of the UAW union hall. It was way out of town and our closest neighbor was a bar. It doesn't get much better than that. We had some wild parties out there and we would jam until 2 or 3 in the morning...or until we passed out, whichever came first. |
On May 15 & 16, 1981, we did a pair of shows at "The Hole in the Wall", a club in Borger, Texas. The link below is audio of the opening set.
"Badd-Azz Rock Band Live at The Hole in the Wall, Borger, Texas, May, 1981"
Ernie Murray was a close friend and instrumental in bring me into the band. Here we are rocking out at "The Hole in the Wall" in Borger, TX 1981. | This was an early attempt at customizing our logo. I worked on this independently of the rest of the band. In the end, we decided to keep it simple. |
Here is a scan of an early Badd Azz business card. This was used before Fred or myself joined the band. | Here is Preston on his drum kit. Preston, in my opinion, was one of the best drummers that I ever played with, and a great person as well. |
Here we are again at the "Hole in the Wall" in Borger, Texas. One of many gigs we did during this incarnation of Badd Azz. | In 1981, we were approached by this guy who was supposedly putting together a show at the Amarillo Civic Center opening for Roger Waters. It turned out to be total B.S., But hey, it was fun to dream... |
In 1981, we won a battle of the bands at the Oz Club in Amarillo. It was great. The picked us up in a limo and took us out to dinner before our encore performance. We really got star treatment. It was great! | At "The Hole in the Wall" once again. Notice the fog at our feet. We had a home made fog machine that used dry ice. Great effect, but it left the floor wet and a little slippery. I busted my ass more than once. |
A great shot of Preston's drum setup at "The Hole in the Wall". He used 2 drum kits put together to have a double bass setup. I'm told he still has those drums more than 30 years later. | One of our last gigs together was at a club called "The Hole in the Wall" in Borger, Texas. It marked an end to a great time and a great band. |
